AUTHOR: NOEBEL, DAVID A.

Title: Rhythm, Riots and Revolution: An Analysis of the Communist Use of Music - The Communist Master Music Plan -

Tulsa: Christian Crusade Publications, 1966 (pbk)

Description: 352 p.; 16 cm.

Notes: The Christian Crusade expose of the communist infiltration of the music industry. The front cover (95K) includes a drawing of Dylan playing an electric guitar, and four quotes:

The back cover features a photograph of the author (looking a little like Mr. Peepers in black horn-rim glasses) with his mentor, Dr. Billy James Hargis. Dylan's threat to our children is discussed in many parts of the book, and he is featured in his own chapter as the "Prince of Rock 'n' Folk". Joe Cliburn has made this chapter available on the net.

The chapter on "Like A Rolling Stone" features Phil Ochs' comments published in Broadside #63 (October 15, 1965) about Dylan and the song. Some have theorized that it is Noebel who can be heard shouting "Judas!" (Dylan didn't believe him) before his classic performance of the song at the Free Trade Hall show on May 17, 1966, and that the book cover drawing was actually based on that show.

Includes bibliographical references and index.

Subjects: Communism and music; Music, Popular -- History and criticism.

Review: In 1971 R. Serge Denisoff in his book Great Day Coming (p. 146-150) chronicled Noebel's work, pointing out its flaws, but calling Rhythm, Riots and Revolution his tour de force. Wissolik, in his 1995 electronic edition, describes the book as "a piece of racist, paranoid trash that passes as a 'Christian' text". This book is also included in the EDLIS reading list. In November 1995, Joe Cliburn reviewed the book on RMD.
