David Whitaker told the story of his turning Dylan on to this and other books in Telegraph 26, p. 33-34. Dylan read the book in college, and enthusiastically recommended it to his friends. Telegraph 45 tells of the discovery of Dylan's copy of the book.

It was made into a film in 1976, with David Carradine in the title role, an Academy Award nominated performance. It was later the basis for the play, Woody Guthrie's American Song by Peter Glazer.
